Dr. Marisa Marciano is a Naturopathic Doctor & Registered Herbalist (AHG) with expertise in both the education and clinical applications of therapeutic nutrition & phytotherapy. Her educational background includes an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and post-degree medical training from the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine where she is currently both a clinical and faculty member, as well as Chair of the Department of Botanical Medicine. Dr. Marciano is also the co-author of "The Botanical Medicine Manual: A Quick Reference Evidence Based Guide”, and is widely recognized for creating the celebrated online herbal resource www.TheNaturopathicHerbalist.com, both of which intend to serve as relevant and reliable sources of botanical information for both students and clinicians. For nearly a decade she has maintained a private clinical practice focused on the custom formulation of herbal therapies using an individualized and primarily evidence-based approach aimed at integrating the safe use of herbs alongside diet, lifestyle, and conventional pharmaceutical therapies, while continually encouraging the holistic perspectives inherent to herbalism and deep respect for the healing powers of Nature within her patients. Alongside her clinical practice, she regularly conducts herbal medicine making workshops in Vancouver, BC, aimed at fostering a deeper connection between people & plants. Her approach to wellness emphasizes the use of techniques which are inherently in tune with Nature, believing in the body’s innate capacity to heal when provided with the ancient knowledge & foundational therapeutic potential of plant medicine in all its forms.
Blending modern research with traditional wisdom and clinical insights, we’ll look at how herbs can simultaneously influence digestion, mood, and cardiovascular health in meaningful and practical ways.
Together, we’ll review key herbal actions—like nervine tonics, bitters, adaptogens, and heart-supportive plants—and learn how to weave them into thoughtful, individualized formulas for complex, multi-system patterns (think mood + digestion + cardiometabolic health). Expect a mix of physiology, energetics, and hands-on clinical application to help bring it all to life.
List of plants that will be covered in the class:
•Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)
•Vervain/Blue Vervain (Verbena officinalis / V. hastata)
•Oatseed / Milky Oats (Avena sativa)
•Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
•And many more
6 learning outcomes:
1. Explore and describe the physiology of the gut–brain–heart axis, gaining a deeper understanding of how these systems communicate through various neural, endocrine, and metabolic pathways.
2. Deep-dive into key herbs that work with the body to gently influence digestion, mood, and cardiovascular function.
3. Review major herbal categories—including nervines, cardiac tonics, bitters, adaptogens, and lymphatics—and thoughtfully match them to clinical presentations.
4. Engage with both research and traditional knowledge, learning how to critically evaluate and integrate these perspectives into meaningful clinical practice.
5. Discuss herbal protocols for complex, real-world cases where mood, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular concerns overlap.
6. Apply principles of safety, dosing, and herb–drug interactions with confidence and care when working with multi-system conditions.
