Hi Nicole (and Liza!) :),

While I haven’t come across anyone having this reaction to mullein either, I think it is completely possible to have a, unique to you (and maybe a handful of others) sensitivity reaction to it. As Liza mentioned, stop drinking it for now. Another nice moistening and gentle lung herb is marshmallow. For lung concerns, the best part to use is the leaf in an overnight cold/cool infusion, but you could also use the root in a similar way if that is all you have or can find.
I also like hyssop as a relatively gentle lung herb, but it isn’t as moistening and tonic as the mullein or marshmallow.

It would be good to understand the root cause to the dry cough. It would be good to get in to see your GP, if and when you can, to rule out any other complications or causes and maybe find out what the cause is. Something that popped into my mind while thinking about this is that gastric reflux can cause a dry or irritated cough. One can also have ‘silent acid reflux’ that is primarily occurring at night, causing the worst of the coughing to be present in the morning often.

I’m certainly not saying that this is what you have but it is a thought and something to investigate with your doctor or primary healthcare physician. If this were to be the case you would be looking at managing the cough situation with diet, and herbal protocols that can support your digestive system alongside the soothing lung herbs (which marshmallow can be helpful for both really!).

We hope this is of some support and that you can find some relief soon and get in to see your GP
Warmly,
Benna
