Hi, I’m Jill, a Dene Tha First Nation member from Treaty 8 territory. I’m enrolled in the Community Herbalist Certificate and loving it so far. This course brings me back to so many memories and thoughts of my ancestors, the history, stories told of how medicines were used and my own experiences on the land. I usually harvest wild mint and yummy edibles but as soon as I become confident, I picture myself on the land crawling, bending and picking herbs, medicines.
I’ve always been intrigued and curious about plants, flowers and trees. Everywhere I go I take pictures of plants like flowers, herbs and trees. Wondering what they were and how it is used or can it be eaten? Then about a month ago I began reading ‘The Boreal Herbal’ by Beverley Gray who mentioned Herbalist. I started searching online and came across Pacific Rim College. I was amazed, thinking OMG I can’t believe there is a course that teaches medicines and more and I can take it online.
Oh yeah the introduction of myself. I’m a stay at home mom to two teen children while the rest have grown with children of their own. I work out of my home part time, volunteer and sit on boards. Finally taking care of myself and following my dreams. My hope is to revive, revitalize and renew interest in the land for children, youth and anyone wanting to learn about renewable resources such as herbs that are medicinal, edible or utilizing the natural material. I am a stewart of the land and am willing to share my knowledge, teachings and stories to continue to protect and preserve Mother Earth for generations to come.
Mahsi Cho, Thank you for reading
