Hi Diane,
The cream formulas in the Therapeutics section do indeed, contain a fair amount of oil. Some of them actually have a 35ml of oil in 25 ml of base cream. The base cream that David is likely using is very thick and created specifically for adding therapeutic amounts of oil into. It is likely the base cream from Rutand Biodynamics. This is the cream I also use in my apothecary often as well. You can take a look at it online, although they don’t give much ingredient information and this is a practitioner only company.
It can be hard to find thick enough creams outside of companies that only sell to businesses or practitioners.
What is occurring when you get to the 2:1 ratio? Is it splitting? Is it just getting too runny? This could help determine what else you may need.
I will say that when I am using a cream base and adding oils, I actually find that even a 3:1 (cream to oil/tincture) can still be very effective if your oils are strong enough. So having a 2:1 ratio is actually likely still plenty effective if you are still having a hard time finding appropriate base creams to start with.
I wish you good luck and smooth cream making as you move along.
Warmly,
Benna
