First things first: I’m very sorry to hear that you did poorly on this practice exam. You are correct in wanting to make sure that you’re not missing important pieces in your diagnosis.
There is something important you should remember when it comes to the words Yin and Yang when paired with organs: a root Deficiency is implied.
For example, if I say Lung-Yin Deficiency, I’m implying that there is Lung AND Kidney-Yin Deficiency. You’ll notice this when you read Maciocia. When there’s a Lung-Yin Deficiency in his book, it includes Kidney-Yin Deficiency symptoms. Here is a quote from page 548:
“First, Lung-Yin deficiency, in time, leads to Empty-Heat in the Lungs. Although Lung-Yin deficiency frequently derives from Kidney-Yin deficiency. as mentioned above, the reverse is also true as Lung-Yin deficiency may lead to Kidney-Yin deficiency.”
These questions are hard. It’s got Kidney-Yin Deficiency written all over it, until…you read about the sore throat.
Then, the question didn’t have the option for Lung & Kidney-Yin Deficiency, so you’re left with the “implying” answer of Lung-Yin Deficiency which implies a general/Kidney-Yin Deficiency.
