My apologies for the delay in response, this question was missed.
The stomach muscles (which are smooth muscle) maintain constant tension, or “tone”, which allows them to hold shape and function. The tone can fluctuate and become more relaxed with larger meals, and more contracted when digesting and emptying into the small intestine. Other smooth muscle along the GI tract also maintain a state of continuous tension as well.
