Hello Everyone. My name is Jay Duncan and I have just registered for the Community Herbal Medicine Program. I am very excited. I live in beautiful Victoria, BC. I am a semi-retired Birth Doula and Childbirth Educator, so my interest in herbs surrounding topics of pregnancy, labour, lactation and the early postpartum period has always been a keen interest of mine. As I hit menopause, my interest in herbal medicine in order to support me through menopausal symptoms grew ten fold. All my doctor wanted to do was put me on Hormone Replacement Therapies, but I knew that I did not want to return to ingesting synthetic hormones after being on birth control pills through my late teens, 20’s and 30’s. That began my exploration into natural remedies to ease my uncomfortable and at times demoralizing symptoms. I turned 60 last year, and began thinking quite deeply about how I want to live the third chapter of my life. I want to embrace healthy ageing, and to me, that meant looking into more natural methods of taking care of myself without harmful chemical side affects. I’ve been dabbling into teachings and books regarding how the plants beneath our feet offer most of what we all need to keep our systems healthy. Indigenous people have known about this all along. I am eager to learn as much as I can regarding plant medicines in order to support not only myself, but my family and friends, clients and colleagues as well.
